A TOOWOOMBA retail store which opened with the aim of empowering teenage girls is closing after two years.
Harper Bee opened at Grand Central in September 2017 and offers a range of age-appropriate clothing, jewellery, bedroom and bathroom accessories, stationery and other tech delights to allow girls to express themselves.
Harper Bee is the brainchild of mother-daughter duo Janine Burford and Jessica Wood.
Last week Ms Burford announced the Toowoomba store would close on Sunday.
"I know how much you all absolutely love the store but unfortunately we just aren't getting enough money to cover our costs," she said.
"Some of you don't know but Harper Bee isn't a chain or franchise, it's my own store so while it's a tough decision to close, losing money month after month means we just can't stay open."
But it's not all bad news, because while the physical store is closing Harper Bee will still operate as an online store and make a return as a pop-up store for Christmas.
"This summer we are going to be opening a little pop-up store in Grand Central for Christmas and back-to-school," Ms Burford said.
"Two really exciting things - we will have some brand new Harper Bee items plus a new back-to-school stuff in a brand for girls and boys.
"In the meantime you can keep shopping online, which I certainly hope you do.
"From now until we close everything in our Toowoomba store is half price so make sure you come in and see what we've got left and grab something."
Many Harper Bee fans were quick to share their sadness at the store closing.
Katrina Reed said: "Such a shame, my daughter loved visiting there. It was a terrible position in the centre, tucked away from the hustle and bustle. All the very best with your business."
Tina Marsh said: "That's sad for your Toowoomba fans! Harper Bee is a wonderful store for girls. Happy to hear there will be stuff for boys soon. Will always support your stores Janine."
Eve Marshall said: "Well done Janine. Although Toowoomba will be sad to see you go, I'm sure most people understand the struggle in retail. The future sounds exciting."
Rachel Waddell said: "Will be sad to see you go, my daughter loves Harper Bee and has been to an in-store workshop. Totally understand from a business perspective. Better try and get in there this week. See you at the pop up shop."
Ms Burford will be in store this weekend to thank everyone for their loyalty and support.
Customers can still shop online at www.harperbee.com.au or at the Chermside Shopping Centre store.
