TOOWOOMBA movie lovers are now able to watch the latest films on the big screen as one of the city's two cinemas has reopened.

Event Cinemas at Grand Central opened to the public from 10am today with a half-price ticket offer.

There is no official opening date for The Strand yet but it is set to be before the end of July.

To celebrate the reopening, for a limited time, Event Cinemas will offer half price adult tickets for Cinebuzz members valid across all sessions.

Local BCC area general manager Ian Mills said he was thrilled to be reopening cinema doors.

"Like our customers we have missed watching movies on the big screen, the smell of hot popcorn and delicious Choc Tops," he said.

"Our teams have been working hard behind the scenes to get everything ready and are looking forward to welcoming locals back through doors."

He said people have jumped at the chance to visit the cinema again.

"The response has been overwhelmingly positive, people are excited to be able to visit the cinema again and with half price adult tickets available for a limited time, I anticipate lots of movie lovers visiting us over the coming weeks, whether it's with the kids over the school holidays, for the perfect date night or just to enjoy the magic of movies again," he said.

"And movies haven't gone anywhere while our doors have been closed; in fact there is a great line up of much loved and new films in the pipeline."

Event Cinemas has rolled out a range of new sanitisation and wellbeing initiatives as part of reopening.

The customer experience has evolved to include contactless booking and check-in via the Event Cinemas booking website and app, cashless operations on site, staggered session times, hand sanitiser stations, social distancing measures where applicable in foyer and theatre areas and increased frequency of cleaning.

In addition, Event Cinemas has introduce intelligent social distanced ticket bookings as an alternate to checker-board seating being used as the industry standard.

The custom-built intelligent social distanced ticket booking system will allow family and friends to book seats together in a block, automatically distancing the group from other customers, by blocking seats directly in front and beside the group.
