MOTORISTS on a major highway into Toowoomba are being asked to allow up to 20 minutes extra travel time due to Second Range Crossing works.

Final construction for the New England Highway realignment will start on Friday.

The construction is expected to take up to four weeks, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Upcoming traffic changes on the highway at Mount Kynoch will take up to 20,0000 motorists a day on the new realignment, which is set 30m about the TSRC. The realignment includes a 70m long arch bridge spanning the TSRC.

Lane closures on the highway will be required for the final stages of work before two lanes are opened in each direction, expected from mid-June 2018.

Motorists are encouraged to use zipper merging to move through work zones during the temporary lane closures.

When all lanes are reopened on the realigned New England Highway, demolition will start on the old highway. Excavation will also start to allow for the east-west connection of the viaduct to the TSRC.
