A Tasmanian woman, enraged by a dispute over when her boyfriend should pick her up from a night on the turps, cornered him at their home and repeatedly struck at his face as he covered it with his hands in defence.

Mayfield woman Monique Lisa Blair, 27, who the court heard was an upholsterer by trade, pleaded guilty in Launceston Magistrates Court on Wednesday to a charge of common assault.

Magistrate Simon Brown placed her on a six month good-behaviour bond and did not record a conviction.

The court heard the offence occurred at Blair’s Mayfield residence in the early hours of December 4 last year.

Blair and her boyfriend had been arguing earlier in the night about “relationship issues,” when Blair left her residence to continue drinking.

After 1am, Blair’s boyfriend went to pick her up but there were continuing disputes, including about what time she had expected his lift.

The court was told that at one point, Blair’s boyfriend pulled over and left her on the side of the road, but he returned a short while later to pick her up.

They continued arguing at her place before Blair “cornered” the man and slapped him in the face for approximately 30 seconds, while the man “held his hands in front of his face”.

He sustained a cut lip as a result of the assault and fled the residence, at which point Blair contacted Tasmania Police to express concern for his welfare.

Officers picked him up at nearby Reservoir Rd, Rocherlea and he revealed the assault.

Upon attending the Mayfield address, Blair made full admissions, the court heard.

It was submitted on Blair’s behalf that she remained close with her victim and that he had unsuccessfully attempted to get Tasmania Police to discontinue the charge.

The court was told that Blair had a mortgage, worked full-time, and had no relevant criminal history.

Mr Brown accepted the assault was “entirely out of character” and unlikely to be repeated.
