In North Queensland to inspect schools damaged by the recent flood event, the Minister for Education said schools in Ingham have seen the worst damage with some parts needing “significant work”.

Checking out Mundingburra State School in Townsville on Tuesday, Minister John-Paul Langbroek said of the 106 schools that closed when the flooding began all but 12 had reopened.

“We are in the middle of a natural disaster but to hear from our local principals about the work that’s been done by the local community, plus the work of QBuild and all the various government agencies, plus our local teachers, staff and cleaners here at the school,” he said.

“We’ve had issues with mould, roof leaks, mud, tree limbs …”

Member for Mundingburra Janelle Poole said ensuring students could return to school in a safe environment was paramount.
“They have had a disruptive start to the school year but they are so excited to get back into that learning process and as a government we are supporting ways in which we can do that,” she said.
With schools in Ingham badly affected by the flooding, Mr Langbroek said overall there were enough spaces at the school that weren’t damaged to allow for the schools to reopen.
Both Ingham State School and Ingham State High School reopened from Tuesday, with the high school advising limited capacity and a shorter school day for children of emergency and essential workers or those involved in the clean-up efforts.

With some teachers unable to get to schools at Ingham, Mr Langbroek said other teachers were being provided.

“It’s week three of term one and we know everyone wants their kids back at school,” he said.

“It’s important for their learning, but it’s also important that everyone’s safe when they come back.”

Ingham State School also served as an evacuation centre when the floods first occurred, before the centre was moved to the TAFE building earlier in the week, allowing the school to reopen.
