UPDATE: Detectives have charged a man after allegedly robbing a Toowoomba supermarket and punching a staff member.
Toowoomba detectives will allege at about 4.30pm on Tuesday the 21-year-old Russell Island man entered the store on Hill St and asked a male staff member for cigarettes.
When the man was unable to pay he allegedly attempted to leave the store with the cigarettes before being challenged by the staff member.
The man has then struck the male staff member in the face and left the scene.
The 16-year-old staff member received bruising to his face and lip which did not require medical attention at the scene.
The 21-year-old has been charged with robbery with violence and enter premises with intent to commit an indictable offence and will appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court tomorrow.
EARLIER: A STAFF member at a Newtown supermarket has been left bruised after he was punched by a man allegedly stealing cigarettes.
Toowoomba Police have released an image of a man who they say may be able to assist with their investigation into the robbery of a supermarket in Newtown on Tuesday.
About 4.30pm a man entered the store on Hill Stand asked a male staff member for cigarettes.
When the man was unable to pay he attempted to leave the store with the cigarettes before being challenged by the staff member.
The man then struck the male staff member in the face and left the scene.
The 16-year-old staff member received bruising to his face and lip which did not require medical attention at the scene.
The man (pictured) is described as being in his 20s, Caucasian in appearance, about180cm tall with fair skin, blonde hair and a slight chubby build.
He was last seen wearing a white Nike cap, a white t-shirt with an Adidas motif on the front, a black bum bag, knee length black shorts with a red stripe, white ankle socks and black shoes.
His wrist was also in a collar sling.
