Man and child critical after horror Gold Coast crash

A father and his nine-year-old son have been hospitalised with critical head injuries after a car collided with them on e-bikes on Wednesday night.

A man and child have been critically injured in a Gold Coast crash.

A man and his nine-year-old son are fighting for life after being hit by a car while riding e-bikes on the Gold Coast on Wednesday night.

Initial information suggests a 2005 Honda Odyssey wagon has left the roadway and struck an adult and a child, who were on an afternoon bike ride with their family on Robina Town Centre Drive, Robina at about 6.20pm.

An ambulance spokesman said the injured pair, who had been riding with their family, and the driver of the car had been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

“The nine-year-old boy and the man both have critical head injuries,” the spokesman said.

“The male adult has lacerations.

“The driver has seatbelt burns.”
It is understood that the driver of the vehicle was interviewed by police prior to being taken to hospital.

A police spokeswoman said the car came off the road and struck the male and child.

Police interviewed the driver before he was taken to hospital.

The police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

A Robina resident arrived at the scene within minutes of the crash after hearing engine noise before a massive bang and screams.

“I heard an engine noise for probably 20-25 seconds before I heard sounds of a massive accident, and then screaming and cries for help,” the man said.

“I probably turned up two or three minutes after it happened, there were a few people on site.

“I believe there was an off-duty paramedic and a couple of witnesses that had stopped.”

The man said he was concerned about the condition of the son, who was being cradled by his mother.

The man also said that the father was in a serious amount of pain.

“The father was still conscious, in shock,” he said.

“He was screaming in pain as they were trying to move him, put him on the stretcher for the ambo.

“I’ve got kids myself, it’s absolutely f**king heartbreaking.”
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
