UPDATE 1.15PM: Police are investigating whether speed was a major contributing factor to the death of a Lockyer Valley man in a crash yesterday afternoon.
A vehicle driven by a 20-year-old was seen by police reaching speeds in excess of 155km/h in the Lower Tenthill area shortly before his vehicle crashed about 5pm.
Inspector Paul James said the man was the sole occupant of the car which crashed at a T-intersection at Gatton Clifton Rd and Gatton Helidon Rd.
Police did not engage in a pursuit, Inspector James said.
The car caught on fire as a result of the crash and, despite bystanders pulling the man from the vehicle, he died of his injuries at the scene.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
EARLIER 8AM: POLICE are investigating a fatal traffic crash in the Lockyer Valley on Sunday afternoon.
A man died at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Gatton Clifton Rd and Gatton Helidon Rd at Lower Tenthill about 5pm.
The vehicle had crashed into a dry creek bed and caught alight on impact, forcing the intersection to be closed as firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The man was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said paramedics including a critical care paramedic responded to the scene, however no transports were required.
Traffic in the area was diverted to Placid Hills for several hours as Forensic Crash Unit investigators worked to determine the cause of the fatality.
The road re-opened shortly before 10pm Sunday.
Investigations by the FCU are continuing.
