Labor announces plans for new $10m preschool in Parap

The Territory Government will spend $10m on a new preschool in Parap to replace the current 50-year-old facility.
Labor said construction was set to begin on the project in the next two years and should be operational by 2025.
Education Minister Eva Lawler said the government would embark on a period of community consultation before construction began to ensure the new preschool met the needs of every parent and student.
“Consultation will now begin on where is best placed to locate the preschool,” she said.
“Whether this facility stays here, off site, or whether it’s built on site at the primary school is up to the community.
“We will also consult the community on any other infrastructure that may be needed.”
The redevelopment will also include other infrastructure commitments to make access to the new preschool seamless, including easier parking and drop off areas.
Parent and school council member Paul Eustance said he was fully “supportive” of the new preschool.
“It will certainly assist the school and the teachers in meeting the communities need for an improved younger education campus,” he said.
“Moving onto the larger campus where we can share resources, teachers, and specialist teachers will be the model the council would like to see pushed forward.”
Funding for the facility comes from the NT Infrastructure Plan and Pipeline 2022, said Ms Lawler.
“The preschool project is in the zero to five years timeline,” she said.
“So this project is one that was always planned. But we’re bringing that forward to start immediately.”
The announcement comes after the local member Michael Gunner resigned, triggering a by-election in the electorate.
