Kate Ceberano lights up Darwin Entertainment Centre with Australia Made Tour on Saturday

Kate Ceberano was just 20 years-old when she joined the original Australian Made Tour that included Australian favourites such as INXS and Jimmy Barnes. Just under 40 years later she’s in Darwin to mark the milestone.

It’s just under 40 years since Australian singer-songwriter Kate Ceberano first began setting stages alight across the country, and very soon she’ll be in the Northern Territory to celebrate the milestone.

On Saturday, July 26, the ARIA award winner will perform at the Darwin Entertainment Centre as part of her Australian Made Tour.

It was the original Australian Made Tour of 1986 with INXS, Jimmy Barnes, Divinyls, Models and more than first brought the vocals of Ceberano, who was only aged 20 at the time, into the national spotlight.

Joining Ceberano are two powerhouse musicians at the vanguard of Australian music: Harts, a multi-instrumentalist virtuoso who famously jammed with Prince at Paisley Park; and Kathleen Halloran, a talented rock guitarist and singer who is on her first national tour.

Speaking to the NT News only days out from her show, Ceberano said she was very excited to come to Darwin.

“I love it, are you kidding me? I get to come from a cold winter’s day in Melbourne to the NT,” she said.

She shared that she would love to perform in the Territory more often, however excessive airfares and lack of support for musicians often limited her and other artists’ capacity to travel north.

“I’m an advocate for more support for our musicians,” she said.

“[Airlines] charge musicians enormous amounts just to travel with their equipment, which is dumb to me because I think it only serves to promote Australia when you’re going around to perform.

“I don’t wish for handouts, but I’d love to have some dispensation for people wanting to be Australian and celebrate our music culture.”

With 19 shows down and seven more to go, Ceberano hoped she could bring the same energy to Darwinites as she has done at her other shows.

“Music can’t help but provoke memories, and I know audiences are sentimentally attached to certain songs,” she said.

“I consider it a great privilege to be able to perform, and my body, my mind and my heart are still strong.”

Ceberano said she would like to see a sellout audience at her show – but not because she wants to sell it out for herself.

“I want to sell it out because we want to come again; we want to do this tour again,” she said.

“I would like to invite people to take a risk and come and check it out, because in these times the choices we make for entertainment, I get it, it’s a big, big decision, but I think it is worth it.

“I’ve put a lot of energy into this show; I’d be very grateful and I think people would really love it.”
