A contrite young Gold Coast woman has told a court she has been on a “big learning curve” after police at Burleigh Heads found her driving more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit.

Paradise Point woman Jade Lilly Blanchard, 23, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 15, where she pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of liquor.

The court heard the offence was detected on the evening of May 31 this year.

Officers were performing patrols in the Burleigh Heads area when, just after 9.30pm at Goodwin Tce, they witnessed Blanchard attempt to pull into a carpark but instead mount a kerb.

Officers took up with the defendant and smelled liquor on her breath, the court heard.

She told officers she had only consumed three alcoholic drinks, but a breath analysis returned a positive reading of 0.162 per cent blood-alcohol content – more than three times the legal limit.

Blanchard told the court her being hauled before a magistrate was a “big learning curve for me”.

“I won’t do it again,” she told Magistrate Veena Goverdhan.

Blanchard told the court she had capacity to pay a fine, being employed full-time and earning about $700–$800 per week.

Magistrate Goverdhan told the defendant she needed to be sensible when consuming alcohol.

“Nobody’s stopping you from drinking, you just need to keep it to a point where you know what you’re doing and don’t get behind the wheel,” she said.

Blanchard was fined $700 and disqualified from driving for six months. No conviction was recorded.
