THE Goondiwindi mayor says meetings with a government-owned rail company convinced him an inland rail project could soon become a reality.

Goondiwindi Mayor Cr Graeme Scheu said the meetings with Australian Rail Track Corporation, held across the Darling Downs on the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail project, showed the government was serious about the project.

"This is a nation-building project that will unveil enormous benefits to the agricultural industries along the length of the proposed rail network," Cr Scheu said.

He called for an entry point to Queensland as close as practical to Goondiwindi where intermodal hubs on the eastern side of town could be established.

Cr Scheu said the route from Melbourne to Narrabri had been finalised and another from Narrabri to North Star was all but decided.
