A FORMER church designed by a renowned Queensland colonial architect and since renovated into a stunning family home has sold for $395,000 at auction.

Raine and Horne Toowoomba real estate agent Paddy Ryan said the property was shown to 50 interested parties before Saturday's auction.

St Alban's Church of England in Gatton was built in 1878 and was the product of one of the finest architectural minds in Queensland - Stanley Drummond Greville Francis.

Mr Francis was responsible for designing a number of iconic pieces of Queensland architecture, such as the Brisbane General Post Office, the Queensland Club, and Toowoomba Post Office.

In 1967, the church was moved up the valley to its present site at 210 Mackenzie St, Toowoomba, where in 1982 Ties and Marjorie Poutsma bought and re-purposed it for their home. The historic chapel-turned-residence sold under the hammer on December 16.
