WOMEN who live in Highfields have been encouraged to get a free mammogram while the mobile breast screen clinic is in town.

The state-of-the-art mobile breast screening service will be at the Highfields Village Shopping Centre near Woolworths from Monday, September 2 to Friday, September 13.

BreastScreen Queensland Toowoomba Service health promotion officer Alexandra Robbins-Hill said breast cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer for women on the Darling Downs, a trend that was reflected nationally.

"Across Australia, one-in-seven women hears the news that she has breast cancer," Ms Robbins-Hill said.

"Early detection is so important as it can be found through a mammogram before it can be seen or felt.

An early diagnosis can give women more treatment options and better health outcomes.

"The mobile vans that visit a variety of areas reguarly have state-of-the-art technology and specialist radiographers like we do at our permanent site in Toowoomba," Ms Robbins-Hills said.

"I really encourage women to take advantage of having this screening service close to home.

"BreastScreen appointments only take around half an hour and they can save your life.

"A doctor's referral is not needed to access this service."

BreastScreen Queensland recommends that women aged between 50 and 74 years have a breast screen every two years.

Women in their 40s and 75 years and over are also eligible for free breast screens in the BreastScreen Queensland program.
