Holtze lockdown: Youth on the roof
April 7, 8am: Holtze Youth Detention Centre was forced into lockdown last Friday after an inmate escaped onto the facility’s roof.
Just after 11am on Friday a boy returned from a scheduled visit, then proceeded to run behind the accommodation blocks, climbed the internal perimeter fence and reached the roof.
The incident triggered an immediate lockdown of the centre, during which staff took measures to secure the premises, establishing a secure cordon around the buildings.
Throughout the course of the afternoon, a team including staff trained in de-escalation techniques engaged with the young person.
After a series of negotiations, the boy safely descended from the roof at 3:11pm without any injuries to himself or staff.
The roof is being assessed for any damage on Monday.
Following the incident, corrections staff participated in a debrief session and by 4:20pm the centre had returned to normal operations.
In a statement the Department of Corrections said staff involved in the incident “demonstrated exemplary professionalism and adherence to established protocols”.
“Holtze Youth Detention Centre continues to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all young people and staff,” the statement said.
