Two people have been winched to safety after they got lost while hiking in the Currumbin Valley on Sunday afternoon.
Gold Coast police acting chief superintendent Peter Miles said the pair – a man and a woman – had set off for a hike at Mount Cougal in the Currumbin Valley, but had become disoriented on their descent.
The woman was able to alert emergency services using her phone.
Polair managed to find the pair by 7.30pm on Sunday, Mr Miles said, but due to the terrain and the time of night, the SES had to abort their rescue attempt.
Mr Miles said the Westpac Lifesaver 45 helicopter was called in early on Monday morning to continue the rescue effort.
He said while it would have been very cold for the hikers, contact with the pair had confirmed they were in no immediate extreme danger and would be able to make it through the night.
A doctor was lowered to the pair on Monday morning to confirm they were fit to be winched to safety, which they were, and they were both safe and sound by 9.15am.
“They had a few minor cuts and abrasions, but overall in good health and no doubt with a story to tell,” Mr Miles said.
He said the pair had done everything right, with a charged up phone which minimised the search effort, and there were no concerns that the track was not signed well enough.
“Thank god for the angels in orange,” he said of the SES workers who assisted with the safe extraction.
