SOME of the new retail shops will be open at the QIC Grand Central redevelopment site by Christmas.
The announcement came yesterday as the newest crane towering over the redevelopment worksite was named after a five-year-old from a nearby childcare centre.
Grand Central centre manager Shaine Beveridge said it would be a busy year ahead.
"We're going to see a whole heap of new retailers that will be open by Christmas this year.
"These are the retailers that Toowoomba people have been asking for."
Mr Beveridge said it meant residents would no longer have to shop in Brisbane.
Construction progress was going well, according to Mr Beveridge.
"Around 85% of foundations have been completed," he said.
"We're also seeing significant progress on our basement car park and a number of other car park structures.
"The retail galleria going over Dent St is really taking shape.
"Very visibly we can see the streetscape along Margaret St taking shape with the façade getting some real form and you can see how it will complement the existing shopping centre."
The new 90-metre, 18-tonne crane, the fourth to be erected on the site, will now be known as the Milla Langton crane after the Mothercraft Childcare Centre attendee.
Project building contractor Probuild last year held a colouring-in competition in conjunction with Mothercraft Child Care Centre.
The five children who produced the best efforts were rewarded by having tower cranes named after them.
Mr Beveridge said the naming was part of a drive by the company to involve the community.
"The people who are surrounding the construction site have been working so well with Probuild.
"Obviously there is going to be some disruption but they've been tremendous."
