EQUIVALENT in height to a six-storey apartment block and able to pack in up to 1000 spectators, Toowoomba Grammar School's Glen McCracken Gymnasium is open for business.
The state-of-the-art facility is spread across four levels and up top includes two basketball courts that can double as volleyball or badminton courts, extensive spectator seating, two classrooms and teacher offices.
Below, there are six indoor cricket pitches, designed and built to a standard only offered in Queensland at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, and which can double as a futsal court.
The multi-million dollar facility represents the biggest single construction project undertaken by the school, with planning for the project dating back nearly a decade.
TGS director of sport and activities Wesley Dunne said the benefits of the new gymnasium would flow through to the school's curriculum.
"By having this facility and having staff in place who can facilitate a well-regimented training program ... I think it just provides the platform for the boys to develop both physically and mentally," Mr Dunne said.
"They obviously haven't had a facility like this before and they're very impressed."
The new facility was named after current TGS Board of Trustees chairman Glen McCracken, who is also the board's longest-serving chairman. TGS buildings are traditionally named after long-serving executives, headmasters or trustees.
