A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the Gold Coast, with heavy rain and hail pummelling the southern Queensland coast and parts of northern New South Wales.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning at 1.24pm on Thursday, cautioning residents of damaging winds, large hailstones, and heavy rainfall.
Hail was seen at Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta, which caused delays to some services, a Gold Coast Airport spokeswoman said.
“Thunderstorms on the southern end of the Gold Coast and Northern NSW this afternoon did impact a number of flights operating in and out of Gold Coast Airport,” the spokeswoman said.
“The safety of our passengers and team, including ground handlers, is always our top priority.
“As a precaution, the apron was temporarily closed due to the hazardous weather conditions which did cause some delays.
“We’d encourage passengers flying out of Gold Coast Airport this afternoon to check with their airline regarding the status of their flight.”
