A wanted man has been bitten by a police dog before being taken into custody over a Gold Coast crash in which an alleged stolen car struck an e-scooter rider.
It’s alleged the Toyota SUV struck a man along the Gold Coast Hwy at Mermaid Beach shortly after 4am on Tuesday, knocking him from his scooter.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the rider sustained minor injuries and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition as a precaution.
The vehicle allegedly fled the scene before police arrived. A Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers conducted checks and established that the vehicle had allegedly been reported stolen from NSW and the investigation was handed over to officers at Tweed Heads.
A New South Wales Police Force spokesman said that at about 8am the same morning officers attended an address on Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads as part of their investigation, where they located the alleged stolen SUV.
“At the scene, police attempted to negotiate with a man who allegedly ignored police direction to exit a unit,” the NSW Police Force spokesman said.
“Police forced entry and a 29-year-old man was arrested with the assistance of the Dog Unit. The man was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital for the treatment of a dog bite wound before being taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.”
It’s alleged the man was wanted on a revocation of parole warrant for traffic and property offences. He is currently in the custody of NSW Department of Corrective Services.
No charges have been laid at this stage.
