Robina crash: Family of nine-year-old who sadly lost his life speak of ‘unimaginable pain’

The family of a nine-year-old boy killed in a horrific crash on the Gold Coast last week has spoken of their “unimaginable pain” as the police investigation into the incident continues.

The family of a nine-year-old boy killed in a horrific crash on the Gold Coast last week has spoken of their “unimaginable pain” as the police investigation into the incident continues.

The family of four was riding bikes on a path at Robina Town Centre Dr at about 6.11pm on Wednesday October 23 when they were struck by an out-of-control car.

The young boy, Aiden, and his 46-year-old father took the full force of the impact and were rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital, where the nine-year-old sadly passed away the following day.

The boy’s school, Hillcrest Christian College in Reedy Creek, is co-ordinating donations for the family as they navigate their grief.

In a message to the school community, Aiden’s parents said they were struggling to deal with their loss.

“Our family is heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son, Aiden, earlier this week. We are struggling to process this unimaginable pain and find a way to move forward without him,” they said.

“During this difficult time, we have been incredibly touched by the outpouring of love and support from our community. Your kindness has provided us with much-needed comfort and strength.

“As we begin the journey of healing, we humbly ask for your prayers and support. Any contributions to our family during this time would be deeply appreciated and will help us navigate the days ahead. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your love and support.

The car that struck Aiden was driven by a 47-year-old man, who was not seriously injured in the crash. Witnesses have alleged the car was seen driving erratically before it hit a centre median barrier and careened off the road.

The Queensland Police Service’s Forensic Crash Unit continues to investigate the cause of the tragic incident.

Speaking on Monday, Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said it was a complex investigation and expressed his sympathies to Aiden’s family.

“Our condolences go out to the family of the nine-year-old child, it’s a terrible situation. Parents should not have to bury their children,” he said.

“We have to look at the reasons why the vehicle struck the child and their father. Things like, was there a medical episode, we have to get mechanical inspections of the vehicle, we have to ascertain was there any other reason that could cause that, and then we look at driver behaviour.

“So it’s a complex investigation, it’s ongoing and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young boy.”
