Police hunt driver over crash at Nerang’s Allambe Memorial Park

A car left the road and crashed through a hedge and over Memorial plaques at Allambe Memorial Park in Nerang.

The driver of a car which ploughed through a Gold Coast cemetery at speed, damaging multiple plaques, remains on the run from police.

Officers were called to Allambe Memorial Park in Nerang at about 5.30pm on Saturday where a Honda Accord Euro was found by members of the public crashed and abandoned.

Police believe the car had been travelling east on Nerang Broadbeach Rd when it crossed into the oncoming lanes and down an embankment continuing through the cemetery.

The force of the impact obliterated the vehicle, shattering windows and setting off the airbags.

It’s understood roughly 20 memorial plaques have been damaged or affected as a result of the crash.

A spokeswoman for InvoCare, which operates the cemetery, confirmed the loved ones of the damaged plaques have all been contacted. The business has confirmed it will foot bill for the repairs.

On Tuesday, police were still on the hunt for the driver involved in the incident. The vehicle, which is understood to be registered in New South Wales, has not been reported stolen.
