A popular Italian restaurant helmed by a renowned chef has closed its doors after two years of trading. FIND OUT WHY

A 160-seat venue on the northern Gold Coast has closed down after two years of trading.

Mozza Mozza located in Southport Sharks was part of restaurateur Dave Galvin’s impressive portfolio of bars and restaurants. His line up now includes up-market dining venue Kost in Broadbeach, Crafty’s sports bar in Biggera Waters and popular southern spot Kirra Beach House.

According to a social media post on Mozza Mozza’s official Instagram page the Italian dining venue closed in mid December after opening in November 2022.

“After an amazing few years, Mozza Mozza has fired up its last pizza, tossed its last pasta and shaken its last cocktail,” the post said.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has made Mozza Mozza what it is today, including our wonderful team and loyal regulars. We are going out on a high, with incredible reviews, a huge social media following and so much local love.”

Delivering menu highlights such as Mozza puff pizza bread, Nonna’s meatballs and crab spaghetti the restaurant was opened by Chef Hat Award winner and Gold Coast local Mitch Chesterton.

The head chef had worked in multiple top-flight restaurants including Alchemy, Peak Dining at Iceworks in Paddington and was also the chef/owner of Iku in Burleigh.

The Instagram post said Southport Sharks had “mutually agreed” with Mozza Mozza to reacquire the space for the club’s continued growth and expansion of its food and beverage operations.

The closure comes three months after Mr Galvin’s upscale chicken restaurant Bird Royale in Southport was placed into voluntary liquidation after two years of trading.

At the time Mr Galvin said they had experienced “tough trading conditions” and “didn’t want to further the lease”.

Both Mr Galvin and Southport Sharks have been contacted for comment.
