A family-owned Gold Coast brewery which opened eight months ago is now home to one of the world’s best beers.

On May 15, Miami brewery RojiCat was awarded the best speciality flavoured beer at the Australian International Beer Awards for their ‘Chilli Cat’ creation.

The venue took the southern Gold Coast by storm when the Lee family, including Olivia, Connor, Angus and their friend Satoshi ‘Toshi’ Tamura, opened the new venue in September last year.

Olivia said it was an “incredible honour” to win the award, but pointed the attention to their head brewer and former Black Hops brewer, Mr Tamura.

“We are truly lucky to have someone as talented and innovative as Toshi brewing with us,” she said.

“He lives and breathes beer.

“To see Chilli Cat recognised on a global level is a powerful validation of that love and dedication.”

The Chilli Cat beer is brewed with pale malt, wheat and rice and was described as “light, hazy and low in bitterness”.

“Chilli Cat stands out because it isn’t your average sour beer,” Olivia said.

“This light-bodied sour opens with a juicy tang of yuzu, quickly followed by a delicate chilli kick that activates your tastebuds with a gentle zing.

“It’s the kind of beer that surprises you at first sip and then hooks you in.”

Olivia said locals had welcomed them into the community with open arms.

“It’s been amazing to see how quickly the community has embraced the space. Not just for the beer and food, but as a place to connect, relax and have a good time,” she said.

“We’ve had so many familiar faces return week after week.”

Olivia said they plan on transforming the beer bar into a month-long winter wonderland in July.

“Expect a full snow theme, new food menu items, seasonal cocktails, and of course, some exciting new speciality brews from Toshi.”
