Being a “big sister” to younger students is Vanessa Kimber and Faith Archer’s mission as Ormeau Woods State High School co-captains for 2025.
Ms Kimber and Ms Archer were among dozens of year 12s named future leaders of the Gold Coast at an induction ceremony at Southern Cross University on Tuesday night.
Ms Kimber said she looked up to school captains in her younger years and now wants to also be a role model in her captaincy.
“Ever since I was little, like in primary school, you see those year 12 school captains and role models ... they were like my big sisters, there were massive role models for me,” she said.
“They really helped me through year 11, and I really want to be that person for some of my other peers and younger grades.”
Ms Archer agreed saying: “I was school captain in primary school and I love doing it ... I want to keep being a role model.”
Ms Kimber said she also wanted to focus on fostering a sense of community within the school.
“I‘ve been involved in a lot of communities, like clubs and programs throughout high school, and it feels so rewarding seeing groups of kids who wouldn’t usually talk to each other come together,” she said.
Ms Archer said she wanted to ensure younger students felt comfortable talking to her.
“I definitely want to make it so the students around us know that they can come talk to us,” she said.
“Make them know that we’re there for them so they need anything they can come talk to any of the leaders.”
Ms Kimber is aspiring to pursue a Bachelor of Law after school and Ms Archer is looking to get into primary education.
