A man has been hospitalised for serious facial injuries in one of two new assaults in Burleigh at the weekend.
A confrontation between two groups at a business along The Esplanade about 12am on Sunday left a 32-year-old alleged kicked and punched to the ground.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said he was taken to Robina Hospital and treated for injuries including a broken nose.
Two hours prior earlier, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics were called to a separate alleged assault on nearby Goodwin Terrace where a man in his 20s had facial injuries. He didn’t need hospitalisation. The QPS spokesman said no formal complaint was received from the victim - officers won’t be taking further action.
The two incidents followed another alleged assault earlier in the week at Memorial Park in which police responded to a disturbance around 11.15pm on Monday. A man was found with a laceration and transported to hospital for further treatment.
For months the Bulletin has highlighted violent assaults plaguing the idyllic beachside suburb which has been beset by anti-social behaviour, including:
- A gang bashing on Australia Day in which up to 30 teens assault two boys near Justin Park leaving one of the victims with a broken eye socket and another with a broken jaw.
- A violent robbery along The Esplanade in which a 45-year-old man was punched to the ground. A group of males then stole the victim’s phone and wallet before leaving in a 4wd.
Community safety concerns at Burleigh Heads hit a crisis point late last year after 22-year-old Cameron Duce died in an alleged coward’s punch attack in in September.
Burleigh Heads MP Hermann Vorster and Police Minister Dan Purdie announced a multimillion-dollar community safety plan for the suburb in the lead up to the October state poll to tackle escalating crime.
Central to the investment was a commitment to a dedicated police beat. It was recently revealed the proposed police beat had no timeline.
The City is working on creating a memorial for Mr Duce.
A recent report by council found Burleigh’s crime wave has taken off by almost 10 per cent in a year with the Justin Lane area the biggest safety hot spot.
