Labrador home destroyed in inferno, six occupants evacuated safely

A Gold Coast family has been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs after their home was destroyed in an inferno on Tuesday afternoon, as an investigation continues into what sparked the blaze.

A Gold Coast family have lost everything after their home was destroyed in an inferno, but the community have been quick to step up to the plate to help.

Emergency services were called to the property on Nevenia St, Labrador just before 3.15pm on Tuesday.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said fire crews on scene had the fire contained within half an hour, and were working on extinguishing the blaze as at 3.50pm.

All occupants were accounted for, the QFD spokesman said.

No one was injured in the blaze, though paramedics were on standby, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.

Police at the scene told this masthead there were six occupants of the house, which appeared to have been gutted by the fire.

All were evacuated safely, with no injuries reported.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said there were unconfirmed reports that a lithium ion battery in an e-bike may have caused the blaze, though it was too early to tell.

Neighbour Elma, who asked not to provide her surname, said she called emergency services after hearing screams of “fire”.

“I was just in my room right next to their backyard, and I heard singing, they were all singing or something like that,” she said.

“Out of nowhere I heard this popping noise, and then I heard ‘fire, fire, fire’.

“So I called the firefighters, I think they came about 10 minutes ago after I called.

“It all happened so quickly.”

Other residents in the area took to social media to share pictures of thick clouds of dark smoke which polluted the air as a result of the fire.

Gold Coast city councillor Joe Wilkinson also took to social media to urge residents to avoid the area as emergency services continued to combat the blaze.
