A man who broke down the door of a Labrador home and attempted to enter the dwelling has been sentenced after he was identified by a tattoo on his leg.

Jessie James Hill, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted enter dwelling with intent by break at night in company and one count of unlawful use of motor vehicle intended for indictable offence when he appeared in the Southport District Court on Thursday, May 1.

The court heard Hill and three other males drove to a house in Labrador in a stolen Volkswagen around 12.30am on January 3, 2024.

The four males walked to the side gate of the home but ran back to the car when an alarm began to sound out.

Later, one of the men walked up to the steps of the front door and Hill kicked the front door open.

The noise woke up a person inside the house who yelled “get the f*** out of my house” three times.

Hill and the other male ran back to the car which drove off with all four males inside.

The court heard Hill was identified by a distinctive tattoo on his leg that was captured in CCTV footage. He was charged when he was arrested on other matters.

Judge Rowan Jackson said Hill’s charges were serious.

“People should be able to be in their homes without worrying about the likes of you kicking in their front door,” he said.

The court heard Hill came before the court with a criminal history and had been sentenced for like offences in Ipswich District Court in 2020.

Judge Rowan Jackson KC noted the optimistic sentencing remarks from the judge at that appearance and said he hoped there was still reason to feel some optimism for Hill.

“It seems as though you have got a continuing problem with methylamphetamine,” he said. “And I know from dealing with people in this court all the time who have a problem with that drug that if you don’t get off it, you’re just going to spend more time here.”

He noted there was a significant gap in Hill’s history since a Magistrates Court appearance in October 2020.

“Try to make that gap continue this time. Try not to come back if you can,” he said.

He noted Hill’s difficult upbringing, mental health diagnoses and his visits to a psychologist while in prison.

Hill was sentenced to 15 month imprisonment with immediate release on parole.

Judge Jackson warned Hill about his drug use.

“Really unless you get that under control, you’re just going to be back here,” he said.
