Two prisoners have been taken to hospital after reports of a stabbing at Barwon Prison on Wednesday.

A Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) spokesman said the incident at about 2.30pm was “prisoner on prisoner”.

He said multiple response codes were activated and there were no staff injured.

A police spokesman said officers were investigating after three men were involved in a fight at the correctional facility in Lara.

“Police attended the Bacchus Marsh Road facility about 2.20pm,” he said.

“It’s understood two of the men sustained stab wounds during the incident.

“Two of the men, aged in their 20s, were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

“Another man sustained minor injuries and was not taken to hospital.”

The spokesman said all three would be interviewed by police in relation to the incident and the investigation was ongoing.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to Lara about 2.30pm.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said: “the safety and security of our staff and people in custody is our priority - any act of violence is treated seriously and referred to Victoria Police.”

In September 2023, a supervisor was allegedly assaulted and spat on by an inmate with HIV at the prison.

In July 2023, a man with serious injuries was flown to hospital after an assault at the prison.

In May 2023, an inmate had his prison term extended following a jail yard assault.

A former HM Barwon Prison officer of 15 years earlier this month said escalating violence was not only a result of inadequate staffing levels, but was further exacerbated by a lack of effective communication channels, insufficient training for personnel, and an increasingly toxic organisational culture.
