Two men have died after a horror crash in Moriac on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to Cape Otway Rd, between Mount Duneed and Ervins roads, about 8.30pm after reports two vehicles had collided head-on.

The driver and sole occupant of each vehicle – a 23-year-old Moriac man and a 59-year-old Winchelsea man – both died at the scene.

Police believe the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when one allegedly veered onto the wrong side of the road.

Footage from the scene, about 20km west of Geelong, shows a red and a silver sedan both completely crumpled following the collision.

Smashed glass and broken metal still littered the side of the road, near a small bend, on Tuesday morning,

The speed limit where the collision occurred is 100km/h.

One resident said that stretch of Cape Otway Rd was “notoriously dangerous”.

“Trucks pull out onto the road all the time and it can be a bad intersection,” he said.

“Speeding it a factor as well.”

Another resident said there was lack of lighting in some areas along the road, which also makes it dangerous.

There have been several serious crashes on Cape Otway Rd in recent years.

In May this year, two people were taken to hospital after a collision at the intersection of Cape Otway and Reservoir roads.

In 2019, a car and a truck collided at the intersection of Cape Otway and Mount Duneed roads, which left an elderly man fighting for life.

In 2017, a European man died in hospital after he drove down the wrong side of Cape Otway Road and collided with a truck.

“How many more people have to die on Cape Otway Rd in Moriac before something is done about the road,” one local wrote on social media.

Geelong Highway Patrol are investigating the exact circumstances which lead to the crash.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, has dashcam footage or any information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au
