An Oakleigh woman who allegedly killed a man in a Mount Moriac crash in the days before Christmas will face a three-day committal hearing later this year.

Sheung Yau, 28, fronted court on Tuesday for a brief committal mention hearing facing charges including dangerous driving causing death, careless driving and failing to stop at a stop sign.
She has not yet entered any pleas to the charges.

Ms Yau was allegedly behind the wheel of a Mazda CX5 when it collided with a Toyota Landcruiser near the intersection of Cape Otway Rd and the Princes Highway before noon on December 20 last year.

A 62-year-old Docklands man died at the scene, and several others were hospitalised, including Ms Yau, with a 22-year-old female passenger of the Mazda flown to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne.

Detectives from Victoria Police’s Major Collision Unit charged Ms Yau a month after the crash and she appeared in court on January 24 for a filing hearing.

At the hearing, the prosecution were given a deadline of April 18 to serve the brief of evidence on the defence after the prosecution asked for a longer-than-usual period to compile it.

On Tuesday, Ms Yau’s lawyer, barrister Peter Billings, confirmed the matters would proceed to a contested committal hearing, and that he had been given the dates of November 4-6 by the court registry.

An application was made in regards to one of the witnesses.

Magistrate Peter Mellas extended Ms Yau’s bail, which surprised Mr Billings, who said he had thought she was just to appear on summons.

At her filing hearing, Ms Yau’s bail was a point of heated discussion, with Mr Billings raising concerns about the conditions – in particular regarding the condition banning his client from driving.

The matter was adjourned until November.
