A Newcomb burglar had a shower, shaved and took a nap inside a Mount Duneed home after he robbed the property of possessions worth thousands of dollars.

Scott Quilliam, 21, fronted the Geelong Magistrates Court via video link on Monday and pleaded guilty to a string of charges including burglary, theft and handling stolen goods.

At an unknown time between December 28, 2023 and January 1, 2024, Quilliam broke into a Mount Duneed house and stole a safe containing gold and $500 in cash as well as two laptops, an Apple watch, clothing and jewellery.

He then took a nap in a bed inside the home before having a shower and a shave.

Quilliam also stole keys to a Volkswagen car that was parked in the garage and moved it to the front of the house.

The woman living at the property later arrived home and noticed her house had been robbed and her car had moved.

When police arrived at the scene, they found an empty Coca-Cola bottle that was covered in Quilliam’s fingerprints.

A laptop was also found on charge inside, which was stolen from another property in a separate incident, and police believe this was a sign Quilliam was planning to return to the property.

Quilliam was arrested on January 1 but refused to be interviewed.

On 9 November last year, Quilliam stole a wallet, holding bank and business cards, from an unlocked vehicle on Bailey St in Belmont.

He then went to multiple service stations and tobacconists and bought about $180 worth of cigarettes and tobacco using a stolen card.

Quilliam also went to a bottle shop at the Newcomb Central Shopping Centre and bought four 300ml bottles of Jack Daniels mixed with cola, a packet of mixed nuts and a bag of smokey jerky.

Police obtained CCTV vision from the centre, which clearly showed Quilliam.

He was arrested on High St in Belmont on November 21 and taken to the Waurn Ponds police station.

He told officers he could not remember his whereabouts on the day of the offending and made no admissions or other comments.

On December 8 last year, Quilliam stole a shopping bag full of Christmas presents from a Norlane home.

He also broke into a Newcomb home between December 28 and 29 last year by smashing a glass window.

Quilliam stole a MacBook Air laptop, headphones, Ray Ban sunglasses, a Kathmandu backpack, credit cards and $610 in cash.

But he left a drink bottle behind that was covered in his fingerprints and he was later arrested.

Magistrate Michelle Hodgson adjourned the matter until November 11, when Quilliam’s defence lawyer will speak and he will be sentenced.
