Police have revealed the two people killed in a shocking double-shooting on a remote coastal track in the Otways were an elderly couple from the Surf Coast.
A passer-by found the two bodies just before 11am on Friday, on a walking track near Wreck Beach in Gellibrand Lower.
Police on Sunday said the victims were a 78-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, both from the Surf Coast Shire area.
It’s understood officials were unable to contact the next of kin before Sunday and further details have not yet been released.
Officers are not treating either death as suspicious and will prepare a report for the coroner.
It is believed a gun was found at the scene and ballistics specialists attended the site on Friday.
Emergency services rushed to the remote track – in rugged bushland on the coast west of Cape Otway – following the grisly discovery on Friday.
Paramedics attended before a crime scene was established, while Parks Victoria manned road blocks.
The walking track where the bodies were found is connected to the Great Ocean Walk between Apollo Bay and Port Campbell.
An Apollo Bay businessman, who did not want to be named, said on Friday the shooting was “absolutely shocking”.
“This kind of thing does not happen down here,” he said.
