Police investigate suspicious blaze at Norlane house

Police are investigating a suspicious house fire in Norlane – the second blaze in the same street this month.

A person had to flee a house fire in Norlane on Wednesday afternoon – the second blaze in the same street this month.

The latest inferno has been deemed suspicious.

A Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) spokesman said FRV crews responded the a structure fire on Camellia Crescent about 2pm.

He said multiple callers to triple-0 reported a house fire and a power line down.

“Firefighters arrived on scene within four minutes to find a house fully involved with fire,” he said.

“FRV crews, with assistance from the CFA, wore breathing apparatus and attacked the fire internally and searched the property for any occupants.

“One occupant had already evacuated.”

The spokesman said the fire was deemed under control about 2.25pm.

“The incident was being treated as suspicious and the scene was handed to Victoria Police,” he said.

“The power and gas company also attended.”

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives were investigating the blaze.

“Investigations are ongoing into the cause of the fire, which is being treated as suspicious at this stage,” she said.

It comes after a weatherboard house on the same street was destroyed by fire earlier this month.

At the time of that fire, a neighbour described the building as ‘dodgy’ and a ‘bit of a crack house’.

The fire was also deemed suspicious.

Three homes in Corio have also been destroyed by fire since February, with the most recent blaze deemed suspicious.
