Point Lonsdale shooting

A man accused of gunning down another in broad daylight on a well-heeled Point Lonsdale street has fronted court for the first time.

Neil Harrington, 55, appeared in the dock in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday facing a string of charges in relation to the brazen shooting of a 37-year-old in the quiet coastal town.

The victim was flown to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition on Thursday morning and is still fighting for life.

Mr Harrington has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, reckless conduct (discharging a firearm), using an unregistered category A or B longarm, using a firearm in a dangerous manner and using a firearm in the commission of an indictable offence.

He fronted court for a filing hearing before magistrate Simon Guthrie, meaning the matter is in the indictable stream and he could face trial.

The Point Lonsdale man did not make an application for bail and was remanded back into custody.

He spoke only when asked if he could see and hear clearly by Mr Guthrie.

“Yes, your honour,” he said.

His lawyer, Stephanie Mawby, told the court the defence was seeking a hand up brief in the case by January 23.

The hand up brief contains all the evidence the prosecution will seek to rely on at trial.

The case’s informant, Detective Senior Constable Lachlan Balazs of the Armed Crime Squad, watched proceedings via videolink and told the court police had no issues with that timeline.

Ms Mawby noted it was Mr Harrington’s first time in custody and he had a heart condition that required medication.

“I have those medications and will liaise with custody staff,” she said.

Mr Harrington glanced over at several of his supporters who were present in court during the brief hearing.

It comes as details emerged about the alleged ongoing tensions between neighbours on Gill Rd, where the shooting is alleged to have taken place.

George Joynson, who lives next door to Mr Harrington, said there were arguments over cars parking on the front lawn of a large two storey house across the street.

The words “you can’t hide biatch (sic)” have been scrawled in yellow paint on the home’s garage door and was still visible on Friday.

This masthead is not suggesting it was written by Mr Harrington or his associates.

Mr Joynson’s son, Mick, who rushed to his father’s house after hearing someone had been shot, said diesel had been deliberately poured on parts of the same lawn, killing sections of grass.

The no-through road, which is lined with coastal shrub and expensive homes, is just a short drive from the medical centre where the wounded man was treated.

Mr Harrington will face court again in March.
