An injured motorcyclist is expected to be charged after running from the scene of a beachside crash in Torquay, leaving his damaged, still-running bike in the middle of a roundabout.

The crash happened just before 5pm on Friday afternoon on Anzac Drive at Point Danger, close to Cosy Corner and Torquay surf beach

Witnesses said the rider clipped a wooden pole beside the road and was thrown from his bike, which skidded along the asphalt and came to rest in the bushes in the centre of the nearby roundabout on The Esplanade.

They said the man was limping and hopping on one leg after the crash.

Despite passers-by calling out to him, he turned towards Torquay surf beach and ran away, clearly injured and favouring one leg.

“People were trying to get him to stop but he just ran off, towards the dunny block by the beach,” one man said.

“He was hurt.

“I don’t know if it’s his bike but it’s a pretty good one … a motorbike, not a cheap scooter.”

The dark-coloured bike sat among the sticks and scrub in the roundabout, its headlight still on.

A nearby wooden pole was damaged, with what appeared to be part of the motorcycle on the ground beside it.

The crash shocked Friday evening beachgoers at the busy stretch, with many people out for an after-work surf or walk. A curious and confused crowd gathered at the scene as it became clear there had been an accident, but the victim was nowhere to be seen.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed they attended the incident, however “no emergency treatment or transport was required”.

It’s understood that by the time they arrived, there was no one there to treat.

Police officers also arrived shortly afterwards, taking statements from those who had seen the crash and examining the motorcycle.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the man is “expected to be charged on summons for driving offences”.

“Emergency services responded to a collision in Torquay on Friday, 13 June,” she said.

“It is alleged the motorcycle crashed into a roundabout on Anzac Ave just before 5pm.

“The rider is alleged to have fled the scene on foot leaving the motorbike behind.

“He was located nearby and interviewed.

“The rider was uninjured. “

One man who saw the accident claimed he had seen the motorcycle being ridden erratically in the area in recent days.

He claimed the same bike had been doing a “wheelie” down nearby Bell St, a busy dining and entertainment strip, a few nights earlier.
