A family has been left reeling after a victim of a horror smash that killed two was identified as a well-known local and “a lovely young man”.

The township of Moriac, 22km west of Geelong, is still coming to grips with the deadly head-on crash on Cape Otway Rd that killed Cameron Trevena, 23, and the 59-year-old driver of the other vehicle.

Both died at the scene, between Mount Duneed and Ervins Rd.

Mr Trevena’s devastated sister, Hannah, paid tribute to her “beautiful” and gentle” brother, and in a heartbreaking twist, revealed the family had also lost their mother, Kylie, in January this year.

“We are still coming to terms with losing Cam in such a tragic way, and only six months after we’ve lost our mum,” she said.

“We’re just not in a position to articulate our feelings, we are still in shock.

“It’s a difficult time for everyone involved.”

Mr Trevena was set to start a career in the Navy before his life was tragically cut short.

He was described as a “generous brother” who always made people laugh with his “quirkiness”.

“You were at the best point of life,” his sister said.

One Moriac local said, who did not want to be named, said his loss was “horrendous”.

“The whole town is just shocked and saddened,” she said.

“They have been through a lot.”

Another business owner said the community was “pulling for the family”.

“I can tell you that everyone in Moriac has Allan’s (father) back,” he said.

“It’s been a rough time for them.”

Another Winchlesea woman said the Trevena’s “were a beautiful family”.

“My son went to school with Cameron, it is a very sad situation,” she said.

“He was a lovely young man.”

The former Moriac Primary School student is survived by his father, Allan and his two sisters, Emma and Hannah.

A 33-year-old Ballarat man was also killed in a car wreck on Wednesday morning when his Toyota Camry slammed into a tree near Bannockburn.

It was the third road fatality in less than 36 hours across the Geelong region.
