Two men have been charged after a security guard was assaulted at a Norlane bottle shop on Tuesday.
Police allege the pair went into the Thirsty Camel on Melbourne Rd about 6pm and attempted to steal alcohol.
It’s understood they tried to take a 10-pack of Woodstock Bourbon and Cola drinks.
“While they were trying to leave with the stolen goods, a security guard attempted to stop them and they allegedly assaulted him,” a police spokeswoman said.
“He sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.”
Police then arrived at the scene and took the pair into custody.
A 45-year-old Norlane man was allegedly found with a small axe in his backpack.
He has since been charged with assault, theft and possessing a prohibited weapon in a licensed venue.
He has been remanded to front Geelong Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
A 25-year-old Norlane man has also been charged with assault and theft.
He has been bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court at a later date.
The incident is the latest in a string of thefts at the bottle shop and Oppy’s Norlane Hotel.
In February, a man attempted to steal money from the cash register.
Staff said police were called multiple times but were told the station could not immediately respond.
Police confirmed the job was prioritised by an emergency communications operator and directed to a police station for response but it’s understood the station chose to prioritise other jobs that came through at that time.
In December last year, a man spent more than six hours on top of a home in a stand-off with police near the hotel.
He removed his clothing and underwear and officers from the Critical Incident Response Team negotiated with him before he was taken into custody.
