A brutal alleged stabbing on a leafy Geelong street has left a 25-year-old man fighting for life and multiple offenders on the run.
The victim, from Armstrong Creek, was left bleeding on Verner St after being approached by a car and attacked by its occupants before midday on Thursday.
He suffered multiple stab wounds and was left for dead before paramedics arrived.
The alleged attack occurred near the Garden St bus stop on the East Geelong street.
A crime scene was established with specialist police collecting evidence for much of the afternoon.
The victim remains in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital on Friday.
He was first rushed to Geelong hospital with critical wounds to his upper and lower body before being transferred to the Alfred Hospital.
Geelong CIU detectives are still trying to piece together the exact circumstances that lead to the assault.
One resident said the incident “did not look good for the victim” while another described the scene as “horrific”.
The street was blocked off by police tape from Garden St to St Albans Rd.
Investigators believe the man was walking along the eastern end of Verner St when he was approached by a vehicle.
Witnesses reported seeing an altercation before the alleged stabbing.
The offenders fled the scene and remain outstanding.
It’s still unclear if the man was known to the car’s occupants.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
