A drug addict broke into Corio Village Shopping Centre in his underwear after stripping off because he thought he had snakes in his clothes, a court has heard.

Jye Trigg, 22, appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court via video link on Tuesday, and pleaded guilty to charges including burglary, drug possession, unlawful assault and theft.

Magistrate Urfa Masood told the court Trigg’s drug use had been a “consistent feature in all of his offending”.

The court heard Trigg’s father confronted him on April 4 about eating all of their Easter chocolates.

Trigg was in a drug-induced psychosis at the time, and during the argument he punched his father in the jaw.

A month later, on May 2, Trigg stole the car of a Bell Park businessman.

The victim’s brother located the car on Cox Rd in Lovely Banks, with Trigg still inside.

When police arrived, Trigg led them on a chase south to Belmont.

Police found a bottle on Trigg, which contained a liquid believed to be 1,4 butanediol.

When he was asked about the liquid, Trigg told police “it’s not even that much juice”.

Eight days later, Trigg was visibly drug affected when he went to Corio police station but he refused medical assistance.

A search of Trigg uncovered three ziplock bags, which contained around 5g of ice and cutting substances. He was busted again with 4g of ice on another occasion.

On May 13, Trigg broke into Corio Village Shopping Centre just after 2am in nothing but his underwear.

Inside, he got into a menswear outlet and put on about $300 worth of clothing, before walking out and being arrested.

Trigg told police he stole the clothes because he had “nothing to wear” and that he had stripped off believing there was a “snake in (his) clothes”.

The court heard Trigg also stole a green mountain bike in Bell Post Hill on April 21.

Trigg’s lawyer, Hollie Lyons told the court he had recently been diagnosed by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) with having an intellectual disability,

The diagnosis had “never been realised until this point” and may open up new avenues of support.

Ms Lyons said the diagnosis had made Trigg’s 125 days in custody – his longest stint behind bars – difficult.

The court heard Trigg spent time at a rehab centre in Kyabram earlier this year, however, he was asked to leave.

Ms Masood said Trigg needed to address his drug problem, and pressed Ms Lyons to “get the ball rolling” and make inquiries with facilities that may be better suited to him.

“If we don’t try and use this opportunity to facilitate his rehabilitation in the best way possible, it’s going to become a revolving door,” she said.

“If his drug use remains untreated, everything else is going to fall by the wayside.”

Trigg will return to court on these matters on August 8.
