Jean Reynolds, believed to be Geelong’s oldest person, celebrates 109th birthday

A lifelong Geelong resident who won’t give away the secret to a long life – or footy tipping – is still smiling.

If you were hoping to get some words of wisdom about living a long and healthy life from Geelong centenarian Jean Reynolds, think again.

Ms Reynolds said she would not give the secret away.

“Do you think I’m going to be silly enough to tell you?”

Celebrating her 109th birthday at Highton Garden Care Community, Ms Reynolds was joined by fellow residents and staff members.

She has called the aged care facility home for the past 17 years and is a fan favourite among employees for her cheery disposition.

“I might be here today and gone tomorrow … but I’m always happy,” Ms Reynolds said.

It is believed Ms Reynolds is the oldest person in Geelong.

According to website Gerontology Wiki, she is the 11th oldest in Australia – however, this was news to her.

“I didn’t even think about that.”

The current oldest person in Australia is 111 years, with a comfortable two years gap on Ms Reynolds.

Surrounded by blue balloons and floral arrangements, Ms Reynolds was all smiles at the “surprise” party.

“I did not know this was happening … if I did I wouldn’t have worn this!”

The lifelong Geelong resident, who loves footy and the Cats, said she was a tipping champion.

“I pick the footy well … I won’t say I’m clever but I had a good run with it,” she said.

“I didn’t think I could manage it at my age, I am very elderly as you know.

“I’m quite happy with it because I thought I was past it.”

Aside from her devotion to the Cats, Ms Reynolds “adores flowers” and tries to stay on the move.

“My family say to me ‘mum, can’t you sit down for three seconds?’ because I’m always doing something,” she said.
