Guy Burr fronts court, charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury

The man accused of attempted murder over a bloody Whittington stabbing said quietly in court with his arm in a cast.

A North Geelong man accused of trying to kill another man in a bloody Whittington stabbing has fronted court.

Guy Burr, 30, appeared in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday, facing charges of attempted murder and intentionally causing serious injury.

Details of the alleged murder attempt were not read aloud in court, however Victoria Police said officers were called to Irwin Court in Whittington about 7.30pm on Monday, September 23.

A 47-year-old Whittington man was found in the street with stab wounds and was rushed to hospital.

A witness, who aided the alleged victim, told the Geelong Advertiser the man “rocked up” at his doorstep, covered in blood.

According to the witness, the man had multiple stab wounds to his lower body, particularly around his buttocks.

Mr Burr was subsequently charged over the incident on Friday.

In court on Monday he wore a white shirt and sat quietly, not saying a word during the brief filing hearing.

He was supported in court by five family members.

Mr Burr’s defence lawyer, Kate Saunders, told the court there were a number of custody management issues in Mr Burr’s case, including diagnoses of depression and anxiety and his low-IQ, which the court heard was 72.

Ms Saunders told the court Mr Burr was also withdrawing from a drug of dependence and had a history of self-harm.

He also had a significant injury, Ms Saunders told the court, and had received surgery in the past few days.

Mr Burr’s right arm was in plaster cast.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie set November 11 as the date by which the prosecution must hand the brief to the defence.

The court heard that alongside the allegedly attempted murder, Mr Burr also faced charges in a number of separate, more minor, matters.

Some of the other charges include the alleged theft of a motor vehicle – a Honda Civic – as well as Mr Burr’s alleged possession of ice and handling stolen goods, the court heard.

Mr Burr waved to his family as he was escorted from the dock.

He will return to court on January 14 for a committal mention.
