Grovedale mum reunites with paramedic and midwife after unexpected home birth

A Grovedale mum has reunited with the midwife and paramedics who helped deliver her daughter safely in an unexpected home birth.

Bri Telford started feeling contractions about 7am on May 24 last year, and asked her partner Dion Kirchner to call their midwife,

Ms Telford, who was 39 weeks’ pregnant, had endured an induction and a 36-hour labour with her first daughter Violet.

She expected to again experience many hours of contractions before heading to hospital.

Instead, Ms Telford had just 30 minutes before she felt the need to push.

Her baby girl, who she later named Skye, was on the way.

“I called my midwife, who after assessing me over the phone, said we wouldn’t be able to make it to hospital and that we needed to call triple-0 because this baby was coming,” Ms Telford said.

“People tell you the second one will be quicker, but I never expected anything like this.”

Within minutes, Ambulance Victoria Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedics Jordan Rau and Guy Hampshire were at the house.

Ms Brewer arrived 35 minutes later.

Ms Telford described the experience as overwhelming.

“It all happened so fast and was so unexpected,” she said.

“Two hours after getting out of bed, I was holding my baby girl in my arms.”

Ms Telford said her partner remained calm and composed despite the stressful circumstances, stepping in to assist the team with whatever they needed, assisting the paramedics, and midwife.

“I’m incredibly proud of him,” she said.

Skye is just one of the babies Mr Hampshire has delivered during his career as a paramedic.

Mr Hampshire said being called to an imminent delivery could be stressful because it was not a usual call.

He said every birth was memorable.

“It’s so special to be there in the first seconds of someone’s life,” Mr Hampshire said.

“It’s a pretty intimate thing to be part of someone’s family becoming bigger and more complete.”

One year on, Skye is a healthy, happy baby.

She was reintroduced on Tuesday to the midwife and first responders who helped bring her into the world, alongside her family.
