A box of 20-year-old ashes from Western Australia has mysteriously been found more than 3000km away in Geelong.

Zoe Wood was walking with a friend on Monday morning when she noticed the yellow box perched on a concrete pillar at Eastern Beach about 7.30am.

“Initially we thought someone had left their rubbish there or it was a bit of plastic,” she said.

Upon closer inspection, they discovered it was a box of ashes from the Fremantle Crematorium.

A sticker on the top of the box stated the remains belonged to Jozef Pacza who died almost 20 years ago on September 27, 2005 and was cremated days later on October 5.

Ms Wood contacted the Fremantle Crematorium when she found the box.

“They obviously didn’t pick up because they are three hours behind in Western Australia so it was 4.30am over there,” she said.

“Our initial plan was to leave it there because we thought someone may come back to collect it but then we thought maybe that wasn’t such a good idea.”

Ms Wood put a call out online via a community Facebook group that the box had been found and was now with authorities.

A police spokesman confirmed Geelong officers had received the box of ashes and were trying to find the owner.

Some locals suspected the box had been emptied but Ms Wood said it was sealed and “definitely full of something”.

“It definitely sounded like ashes,” she said.

There were some suspicions the box may have floated across the ocean from Fremantle to Geelong.

“The sticker on top of the box was in tact and wasn’t damaged or weathered,” Ms Wood said.

“It has clearly been maintained somewhere.

“I hope they are able to find the next of kin.

“If they can’t, they may have to ship the box back over the Western Australia.”
