A supermarket on Belmont’s busy High St shopping strip will be knocked down and rebuilt as part of a major transformation of the site.

Coles has sought state government approval to “breathe new life into High St” and provide an “enhanced shopping experience” at its 158-162 High St outlet.

The project will include an expanded shopping centre and basement carpark.

A spokesman for the supermarket giant said the Coles Group, which was spun out of Wesfarmers in 2018, said the property development would deliver positive outcomes for the local community.

“This redevelopment will represent a multimillion-dollar investment for Belmont, offering the community an enhanced shopping experience,” he said.

The supermarket is a much smaller and older version of the Coles at Belmont Village, located 900m south.

Coles’ plans, submitted to the Department of Transport and Planning this week, would see the existing structure replaced with a larger store.

This would be facilitated by the removal of the two Church St facing carparking areas.

The new supermarket would be 3445 sqm.

An “art wall” would also form part of the project, as would a forecourt and canopy.

Just 21 car spaces would remain above ground, while a new basement car park would have 160 spaces.

The site was previously home to a Bi-Lo supermarket outlet.

“Overall, the redevelopment of Coles Belmont promises to be a positive step forward for the local community, providing a modern and inviting retail experience, while also incorporating sustainable and community focused design principles,” the plans state.

Coles recently undertook a similar project in the Ballarat suburb of Sebastopol.
