Illegal campers who typically flock to Eastern Beach over the Christmas period are on notice, with council warning of live CCTV monitoring and bolstered patrols.

In recent years disputes have erupted between Geelong residents and visitors, amid claims people have stayed overnight in tents along the waterfront.

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan said the city would respond to an expected influx of visitors by increasing resources, including by adding 11 portable toilets, and the number of bins.

He said more cleaners would clean toilets and park areas more frequently, while extra contracted waste collection would be planned for each day.

Lifeguard roster and coverage will also be expanded and traffic crews will manage the Ritchie Boulevard car park on forecasted peak days, to avoid long queues of vehicles.

There will be live monitoring of the area’s CCTV and officers will increase its patrols to monitor potential issues such as open fires, coal fired barbecues, illegal parking and camping.

Electronic signs will also warn against these issues.

Victoria Police will be in attendance with a focus on traffic and anti-social behaviour.

Mr Sullivan said Eastern Beach was a significant drawcard for visitors.

“We want everyone to have a great time when they visit Eastern Beach over Christmas and New Year’s,” Mr Sullivan said.

“The city is ensuring that there will be sufficient resources and facilities to accommodate the thousands of extra people using this space in this period.”

Councillor Eddy Kontelj said Eastern Beach Reserve was a significant community asset.

“Council encourages residents and visitors to respect those around them and the community facilities,” Mr Kontelj said.

“We all need to do our bit to keep this location a gem in the crown of Geelong, so please dispose of waste in the provided bins or if you can, take your rubbish with you.

Community members can report a public waste bin, litter or toilet issue by calling the city’s customer service line on 5272 5272 or via www.geelongaustralia.com.au.
