A Belmont man tried to steal nearly $400 worth of Lego from a 24-hour Kmart but his plot to switch barcodes with Blu Tack came unstuck at the self-service counter.

Cassidy Hynes, 28, pleaded guilty in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday to charges including theft, going equipped to steal/cheat and theft of a motor vehicle

Hynes had gone to the Kmart in Belmont on October 21 last year just after midnight and attempted to steal the Lego by replacing the barcodes with cheaper priced barcodes, by using Blu Tack.

Hynes tried to buy the Lego through the self serve, however, a weight discrepancy caused the alarm to go off.

The court heard the value of the Lego was $129 per box and Hynes attempted to scan three boxes of Lego for $14 each.

A manager then confronted Hynes about the barcodes and he left the store.

In a separate incident, Police prosecutor Andrew Clapham said on December 3 Hynes and other unknown people went to Corio Auto Parts in North Geelong at 3am.

The court heard the manager was alerted by CCTV that they were looking at cars.

The manager then called police, who arrested Hynes.

Constable Clapham also told the court Hynes was involved in a theft of a motor vehicle, as well as theft of industrial tools.

Hynes’ lawyer, Hollie Lyons, said her client had PTSD and issues with trauma.

Ms Lyons also said her client had a cannabis-use disorder that exacerbated his symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Magistrate Simon Guthrie deferred sentencing until April 9.
