TOOWOOMBA'S Sikh community gathered at the Withcott Sports Centre on last Sunday to commemorate Vaisakhi.

Vaisakhi commemorates the formation of Khalsa in 1699, when the tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh, chose Vaisakhi as the occasion to transform the Sikhs into a group of soldier saints. It is also considered a spring harvest festival by Sikhs in the northern hemisphere.

Sukhdeep Singh said the Toowoomba community's commemorations included readings of holy scripture and singing of holy hymns.

"A lot of people tell me they've come from Brisbane, Gatton and of course Toowoomba,” he said.

"There were about 500 people across the day.”

Mayor Paul Antonio also attended the event, which included servings of traditional foods.
