UPDATE: The first QantasLink flight from Toowoomba to Sydney has taken off.

The plane is expected to arrive in Sydney at 12:30pm after flying for 1 hour and 35 minutes.

The renamed Q400 plane Darling Downs will travel at a cruising speed of 670km/h.

"To see our vision of a jet-capable airport come to life and celebrate the first flight with our first customer QantasLink, it's a moment we are all extremely proud of," Wagners chairman John Wagner said.

QantasLink chief executive officer John Gissing said the inaugural flight to Wellcamp marked a momentous occasion in aviation history.

"Qantas' history began in Queensland over 94 years ago, so we're delighted to be part of this important milestone in the State's history," Mr Gissing said.

"As Australia's largest regional airline, we understand the needs of regional Australia. The new flights will stimulate tourism and business opportunities for the Toowoomba region.

"QantasLink customers travelling to and from Brisbane West Wellcamp will enjoy our exceptional product and service on board our Q400 aircraft, as well as seamless connections to domestic and international Qantas services."

9:12AM: Passengers are preparing to board the first Wellcamp Airport plane from Toowoomba to Sydney.

The Q400 plane has been renamed Darling Downs in honour of the region.

The Darling Downs will depart at 9.55am and is expected to land in Sydney at 12:30pm.

Guests will have lunch at the Otto Ristorante restaurant in Woolloomooloo, Sydney.

The return flight will arrive at Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport at 6.30pm.

The journey is part of a huge celebration for Darling Downs' Wagner family, who, in just 18 months, built

Australia's first ever privately funded greenfield public airport.

With a team working seven days a week, 24 hours-a-day to finish in record time, the project marks a huge milestone for the company which is celebrating its 25 year anniversary this month.

8.40AM: It has touched-down. QantasLink's 74-seat Q400 has landed at Wellcamp Airport.

The plane will take passengers to Sydney in the inaugural QantasLink flight which will be the first regular passenger service.

A mix of the Wagner family, politicians, business leaders and the local community are currently partaking in pre-flight celebrations at the terminal.

A crowd of aviation enthusiasts has gathered at a designated outdoor viewing area adjacent to the terminal.

Mayor Paul Antonio is one of the many exited guests waiting for the flight.

"An exciting day for Toowoomba. Checking-in for the first Qantas flight TWB-SYD," he tweeted.

The flight will depart from Toowoomba at 9:55am.
