The first images of upgrades to one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Gold Coast hinterland have been revealed.
Springbrook National Park and Purling Brook Falls will receive $17m in upgrades as part of the Crisafulli government’s Destination 2045 eco-tourism plan.
The upgrades include a new cable-stay bridge at Purling Brook Falls which will run above all flood levels.
Premier David Crisafulli said he hoped construction on the bridge would start this year.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service principal ranger Mark Patenaude said the bridge would help tracks remain open, even during heavy rain as it would be built above all flood levels.
“It is something that will offer an experience for all visitors, both international and domestic, and it will look out over the water fall and down the valley,” he said.
“It is one of those resilience projects … upgrading this facility will help keep it continually open, increase visitation and enhance the overall experience.”
Mr Patenaude said the bridge would also increase safety for tourists as visitors have injured themselves attempting to take photos on nearby rocks.
Plans also include a new carparking area and visitor hub at the Settlement day use area adjoining Purling Brook Falls, new toilet facilities, improvements to walking tracks and more signage.
“It will further enhance the natural beauty of a really special part of the Gold Coast … and it will drive people to stay a little longer,” Mr Crisafulli said.
